Updated 4.25pm, adds details on second accident

A motorcyclist is in critical condition after he was involved in an accident at the Coast Road in Naxxar on Sunday.

The police said the accident happened at around 11am.

The 53-year-old victim, who lives in Pembroke, was riding a Harley Davidson XL that was involved in a collision with a Citroen C3 that was being driven by a 58-year-old Belgian man.

The victim was given first aid by a medical team on site and was then taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance.

The police are investigating and an inquiry is being held.

Six-car collision

A six-car collision on the opposite carriageway at around the same time led to the road being completely closed for some time.

The cars involved were:

  • A Nissan Note that was being driven by a 42-year-old man who lives in Sliema;
  • A Peugeot 208 that was being driven by a 56-year-old German;
  • A Chevrolet Matiz that was being driven by a 40-year-old man who lives in Sliema;
  • A Fiat Stilo that was being driven by a 43-year-old man who lives in St Paul's Bay;
  • A BMW 320D that was being driven by a 23-year-old man who lives in St Paul's Bay. A 22-year-old man who lives in Mġarr was a passenger in this car; and
  • A Toyota Vitz that was being driven by a 26-year-old man who lives in Fgura. Also in this car were a 25-year-old woman who lives in Fgura and a baby of a few months.

Assistance was given by a medical team and members of the Civil Protection Department on site and six people were taken to hospital by a number of ambulances.

Two - the drivers of the BMW and the Chevrolet Matiz - were grievously injured, the others suffered slight injuries.

The police are investigating.
