A 17-year-old Liberian man, who was yesterday charged with making use of a forged passport, told a magistrate he intended to lodge a request for political asylum as his parents had been killed.

The teenager, whose name is not being published as he is a minor, pleaded not guilty to making use of a passport issued by The Netherlands as he was not aware that the passport was forged.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano heard lawyer Leo Bencini, for the man, explain he intended to lodge a request for political asylum.

The man was remanded in police custody.

Police Inspector Sandro Zarb prosecuted.
