A man was seriously injured when he was hit by a police van which initially kept going in San Ġwann on Monday afternoon.

The victim, a 72-year-old man from San Ġwann, was hit by a Fiat Ducato driven by a 23-year-old constable, who told police that he had initially not realised he had hit someone.

The elderly victim appeared to be conscious immediately after the 5.15pm incident on Feliċ Borg Street and was treated by an ambulance team on the spot before being taken to hospital.

It is still not clear whether the driver gave himself up or was caught by the police.

"I just heard a noise, followed by the hooting of a horn and a car roaring past, fast," said a man who works in an office close to the scene of the accident.
