Man involved in Seabank hotel brawl dies
Roderick Sciortino was celebrating daughter's first birthday before altercation; court told he had 'brain tumour'
A man who was allegedly involved in a poolside brawl at the Seabank Hotel has died on Thursday.
Roderick Sciortino was involved in a fight at the Seabank Resort and Spa on Saturday where he allegedly received a punch from British tourist Liam Joseph Stacey. Sciortino was at the hotel with his partner Alexia Meilak, her siblings and their parents, to celebrate his daughter’s first birthday.
Stacey stands accused of causing grievous injuries to Sciortino. He denies the charges.
On Wednesday, the court heard how Sciortino had a pre-existing health condition which landed him in intensive care on Saturday.
His partner Alexia Meilak told the court: "Roderick was unwell. He used to say he had a brain tumour", adding that he was "being kept alive on machines".
The cause of death will be established by medico-legal experts.
The Santa Marija Musical Society, Ħal Għaxaq A.D. 1873 paid tribute to the memory of Sciortino as a “supporter, long-time member, and enthusiast of the Feast of the Assumption”.
