Man jailed 18 months for trafficking cocaine and heroin

The accused had failed to learn from his mistakes, court finds

A 34-year-old man was jailed for 18 months and slapped with a €500 fine after pleading guilty to cocaine and heroin possession.

Christopher Briffa was charged with being in possession of cocaine in circumstances indicating that the drug was not intended for his own use. He was also charged with selling or trafficking heroin within 100 metres of the perimeter of a school, club or place where young people gather, while also being a repeat offender.

He was arrested on May 7 in St Julian's.

Briffa pleaded guilty to the charges.

In her sentence, Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo took into consideration the accused's criminal record, which illustrated his "criminal character", and that he previously faced charges related to drug use. The court said that, despite having been granted multiple opportunities by the court to rehabilitate himself, the court concluded that he failed to learn from his mistakes.

The court found Briffa guilty of all charges and sentenced him to 18 months' imprisonment and a €500 fine.

The prosecution was led by police inspector Pier Guido Saliba.
