Man jailed, fined over texting ex after being found guilty of domestic violence

The previously suspended sentence was extended

A 42-year-old man who messaged his ex-girlfriend after he was arraigned on domestic violence charges was jailed for a month and fined €7,000.

The man, a Russian national living in Swieqi, was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon. He was accused of breaching a restraining order and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence.

The man had already been arraigned in November and was accused of causing his ex fear that violence would be used against her.

He was also accused of threatening and insulting her, as well as assaulting her.

He had admitted to the charges and was handed an 18-month prison term suspended for four years. The court issued a one-year treatment order and imposed a three-year restraining order in favour of the victim.

On Tuesday, the man admitted to the fresh charges and was jailed for a month. He was fined €7,000. The man’s previously suspended sentence was extended and made to start running from Tuesday.

Magistrate Nadia Helena Vella presided.
