A Somali man has been jailed for 11 months, had his his €10,000 personal guarantee confiscated and his bail revoked after pleading guilty to stealing a laptop and driving a car negligently and under the influence of alcohol.

The court heard how Ahmed Ali Abdiwahab, 30, from Hamrun, first broke into a penthouse Zurrieq early on Sunday morning from where he stole a Samsung notebook.

He left the scene with a car he had borrowed from the penthouse owner and drove it, in a negligent and dangerous manner to Marsa Open Centre where he caused over €650 in damage to the main gate.

He pleaded guilty to the theft, misappropriating the car, driving recklessly and dangerously under the influence of alcohol, damaging the gate and breaching the bail conditions over another pending case.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella jailed him for 10 months, plus another month for breaching bail, ordered his rearrest and the confiscation of the €10,000 personal guarantee.

She also ordered him to pay back the €650 to cover the damage and disqualified him from obtaining a driving licence for three months.
