Man jailed for nine months for 7g cannabis and 3g of cocaine
The 24-year-old was arrested in Paceville
A 24-year-old man pleaded guilty to being in possession of 7g of cannabis and 3g of cocaine in circumstances that denoted it was not for personal use and was jailed for nine months on Monday afternoon.
Khadar Yusuf Abdihakin was arrested in Paceville on Sunday on suspicion that he had been dealing drugs after the police observed him approaching different individuals.
In court, he was charged with aggravated possession of cannabis and cocaine, and of committing the offence within 100m of a place frequented by youths.
The man was also charged with recidivism.
The court warned the man that he was facing prison time in addition with a fine.
The man confirmed him his guilty plea.
In submissions on punishment, AG lawyer Daniel Tabone said the man was found in possession of 7g of cannabis and 3g of cocaine, and requested nine months imprisonment and a €500 fine. The prosecution said the man had no assets.
Legal aid lawyer Silvan Pulis agreed that punishment should veer towards the minimum, arguing that the man cooperated fully with the police and was shouldering responsibility at a very early stage. Pulis confirmed the man has no assets.
The court found the man guilty of all charges brought against him except for recidivism since the relative judgement for his previous conviction was not presented in court. He was jailed for nine months and fined €500, which he is to pay within 12 months.
Magistrate Lara Lanfranco presided over the court.
AG lawyer Daniel Tabone prosecuted, assisted by police inspector John Leigh Howard.
