Man jailed after stalking woman and forcing his way into her home
The man subjected the woman to acts with sexual connotations
A man has been jailed for one year after pleading guilty to stalking a woman and forcing his way into her house.
Shaheen Mohamed Ali Abdurahman Ajeli Nur, a Sudanese national living in Ħal Far, was arraigned under arrest last month, accused of stalking and harassing the woman, pushing her to the floor and subjecting her to acts with sexual connotations.
He was also charged with breaching the public peace and being indecently dressed or naked in public.
He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody.
The woman told police she was walking in Swieqi when she noticed a man following her. She headed for her apartment, and the man continued to follow her, jumping over a fence and pushing her to the floor as soon as she stepped inside.
The man, later identified as the accused, undressed and remained in his underwear. The woman asked for help, and her housemate came and together they managed to get Nur out of the house.
Later during the day, the police got a call from a supervisor at St George’s Bay that a man was allegedly harassing people there. The police went onsite and found Nur. He was taken to the police station in St Julian’s.
Initially, Nur was calm, but as soon as they were escorting him into the station, the man grabbed an officer’s leg and tried to reach out for the weapon. He was held using a minimum of force, police said.
The court sentenced the man to one year's imprisonment after taking into consideration the serious nature of the offences he had admitted to and his clean criminal record.
A three-year restraining order was issued in favour of the victim.
Magistrate Gabriella Vella presided.
Police inspectors Jonathan Cassar and Kelsey Bugeja prosecuted.
Legal aid lawyer Yanika Bugeja assisted the accused.
