Man was hit with a kettle, defence says in domestic violence arraignment

The man and the woman both face court proceedings

A 48-year-old Żebbuġ man was granted bail on Wednesday after pleading not guilty to slightly injuring his partner in an incident during which, according to the defence, she hit him on the head with a kettle.

She is also due to face charges.

The construction worker was accused of threatening, insulting and slightly injuring the woman and causing her to fear violence.

Police inspector Carlos Cordina explained that the woman reported her ex on November 16 following an argument in which she alleged that she had been beaten up. The woman went to hospital and produced a medical certificate showing that she had sustained slight injuries.

The woman scored “severe danger” on the risk assessment.

The man was arrested on November 23 but needed to be hospitalised shortly after because of chest pain. He was then put on police bail.

In court, he denied the charges.

The prosecution did not object to a request for bail as long as the court imposed suitable conditions.

Defence lawyer Franco Debono explained that his client always cooperated with the police, and criminal action would be taken against the woman, who allegedly hit him with a kettle on his head.

It is understood that the woman alleged that the man pushed her down the stairs.

The court granted the accused bail in view of his cooperation, as well as the fact that they live in separate residences.

Bail was granted against a €1,000 deposit and a €5,000 personal guarantee. The court ordered him to sign the bail book three times a week, among other conditions.

A protection order was issued in favour of the woman. Magistrate Tanya Sammut presided. Police inspector Carlos Cordina prosecuted. Lawyers Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri and Adreana Zammit assisted the accused.
