A man has been arrested after he allegedly held a Naxxar couple at gunpoint in their apartment, injuring one of them with a knife and making off with cash and other items.

The incident happened at about noon in a residence on Triq Toni Bajjada.

Police said the 26-year-old man, a Serbian national, had broken into an apartment where he found a 42-year-old Dutchman and a 29-year-old French woman.

He tied them up and, at gunpoint, demanded they hand over money and other items. He also brandished a knife and slightly injured the man.

He then made off with the cash and the items but was tracked down on Triq San Pawl by the police, who had launched a manhunt for the suspected thief.

When the officers approached him, he threw away a bag into a front porch. The police found the gun in the bag.

They also traced his car to Triq il-Parroċċa, in which they found a knife among others. The car had no registration plates.

Police investigations and a magisterial inquiry are ongoing.
