Man threatened to burn his former wife's residence and kill her, court hears

The accused man was remanded in custody

A 67-year-old man was remanded in custody after he alleged told the police that “if my wife is going to throw me into prison, I’ll kill her once I’m out”.

The Sri Lankan national living in Birżebbuġa appeared before the court on Monday. He was accused of breaching a restraining order and a probation order, both of which were imposed on him on September 27, 2024.

He was also accused of threatening and insulting his ex wife, misusing electronic equipment and recidivism.

Police inspector Audrey Micallef told the court that the man allegedly called up his former wife and threatened to burn the residence where she lived.

The woman in turn called up her landlord to inform her about the threats. On October 18, the pair went to the police station and filed a report.

The investigator explained that the man was arraigned under arrest last year and admitted to domestic violence charges.

When he was called to the Birżebbuġa police station for questioning, he allegedly told the police “if my wife is going to throw me in prison, I’ll kill her once I come out”.

Micallef ordered his arrest.

In court, the accused denied the charges.

A protection order was issued in favour of the alleged victim.

No bail was requested at this stage, and the man was remanded in custody.

Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi presided. Police inspector Audrey Micallef prosecuted, while legal aid lawyer Martin Farrugia assisted the accused.
