Man on trial over 2007 drug trafficking case
Gordian Azuogu Ohaegbu allegedly supplied nearly two kilos of cocaine
A 51-year-old man went on trial by jury on Monday morning in connection with drug trafficking charges.
The case dates to 2007.
In February that year, the police were tipped off about a drug deal taking place in St Julian’s.
Drug Squad officers went to the scene and stopped two individuals.
A search on the individuals did not yield any results, but they had a key to an apartment on Mensija Street in St Julian’s, where they found 97 capsules of drugs containing 955g of cocaine. It was later established that the drugs were sold to them by Gordian Azuogu Ohaegbu.
A third man was arrested on March 15, 2007, after he disembarked from a flight arriving from London.
The police found that the man had been carrying 68 capsules of cocaine, amounting to 788.58g. The drugs were going to be handed over to Ohaegbu.
Ohaegbu stands indicted on having conspired to traffic and deal cocaine, of having supplied or distributed the drug and being in aggravated possession of the drug.
He denies the charges.
The jurors were empanelled on Monday morning.
Madam Justice Natasha Galea Sciberras addressed their role in the trial.
