Man. United face Newcastle

Arsenal get Rovers

Holders Manchester United will take on Newcastle and champions Arsenal face Blackburn Rovers in next month's FA Cup semi-finals in Cardiff.

Yesterday's draw pitted United against a Newcastle side who have won their last seven matches in all competitions and dumped Chelsea out of the competition in the fifth round.

Alex Ferguson's men are also in sparkling form in domestic football, however, cruising to a 4-0 rout of Southampton in the quarter-finals on Saturday and yet to concede a goal in their defence of the trophy.

The tie will also bring back happy memories of United's treble year in 1999, when Ferguson's men beat Newcastle in the final at Wembley a few days before lifting the European Cup in Barcelona.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "It's not the draw we wanted, but it won't have been the draw United wanted either.

"There's no reason why we cannot beat them. We owe them one for the Charity Shield defeat at Wembley in 1996 and also for the FA Cup final defeat in 1999, so we'll look forward to this one."

Arsenal, who beat Bolton 1-0 in the last round, will fancy their chances against a Blackburn side struggling to avoid relegation.

Blackburn have not beaten Arsenal for two years and are playing their first FA Cup semi-final since 1960.

Rovers assistant manager Mark Bowen told Sky Sports News:

"Everybody wanted us but we can assure everybody that if Arsenal take us lightly we'll be well-prepared and they'll come a cropper.

"I'm sure they won't take us lightly."

The draw maintains the prospect of a final between Arsenal and Manchester United, who trail Chelsea by 10 and eight points respectively in the Premier League and were both knocked out of the Champions League last week.

United have won the trophy a record 11 times, two more than Arsenal who are second on the all-time list.

The semi-finals will be played on April 16 and 17 at the Millennium Stadium, which will also host the final on May 21.
