Brazil's Vanderlei De Lima yesterday failed to finish his first race since his controversial bronze medal in last year's Olympic marathon.

De Lima, who came third in Athens after being attacked by a spectator, pulled out of the Lake Biwa Marathon after the 33-kilometre mark with an abdominal strain.

Kenya's Joseph Riri won the race in western Japan in two hours and nine minutes. Spaniard Jose Rios finished second with Japan's Michitaka Hosokawa third.

"I don't know why it started hurting," said the 35-year-old De Lima.

"I thought I could shake it off but I couldn't so it's a big disappointment."
