What a busy week of cricket it has been at the Marsa oval where the home side took on two touring teams in a two-game series which they won both.
Ampthill Town CC are no strangers to the islands as they were here on their seventh visit but for Richmond team Cricketers CC this was their maiden tour.
The first game, a 20-over, was played against Ampthill.
The home side batted first and collected an impressive 164 runs, Frank Spiteri top-scoring with 48 runs.
Richard Hardy took two wickets while Tom Degnan claimed one.
Great bowling from the home side kept the visitors at bay, restricting them to 129 runs.
Richard Haxell was Ampthill’s top scorer with 28 runs. Sarfraz Ali felled three wickets for Marsa to win the first game.
The second fixture was against Cricketers CC who batted first and made 123 runs where Matt Grace distinguished himself with 28 runs.
Gordon Hewitt and Graham Lobban took two wickets each for the home team.
In reply, Nowell Khosla led with 57 runs and Andrew Naudi 35 for the hosts to win the game in the 18th over.
Matthew Banton was the main wicket taker for the visitors with three.
The third game, now into 40-over format, had Ampthill batting first and posting a moderate score of 194 runs.
Aaron Reynolds hit 51 runs as Mike Caruana claimed three of the visitors’ wickets.
Another brilliant innings from Khosla – 67 runs – and an even better partnership of 69 between John Grima and Joy Ghoseroy helped the home side over the line in a thrilling game and a series win for Marsa CC.
Cricketers CC batted first in the fourth match. They posted 235 runs and would have been quite comfortable with that score. Gentle top-scored with 56 runs as Lynch made 48 and Summers 45.
However, Cricketers CC must have been perplexed by Haroon Majeed’s display. He hit 80 runs from 35 balls which took the game out of their reach. Sanjay Singh added 42, Niraj Khanna 41, Bikram Arora 30 and Ronnie Sacco 23.
Marsa CC won the series and made it four wins in a row in four days.
