Marsa scrapyard fire cost €166,000 to put out

Byron Camilleri gave the figure in parliament, in reply to a PQ by Rebekah Borg

It cost €166,000 to put out a fire in a Marsa scrapyard that, in November, caused the closure of nearby roads and forced businesses to send workers home.

The site on Marsa's Triq Giuseppe Garibaldi caught fire in the morning of November 21 of last year and took hours to contain.

Times of Malta had revealed that the scrapyard had been engulfed in a similar, massive raging fire four years ago and had previously been warned about a long list of environmental infringements.

Home Minister Byron Camilleri told parliament on Wednesday that initial Civil Protection Department estimates showed the intervention cost some €166,000.

The minister was answering a question by PN MP Rebekah Borg, who asked for the total cost of the firefighting operation.
