Mass to be held in front of Blessed Nazju Falzon’s former summer residence
The house is situated in Triq San Ġiljan in Birkirkara
Many saints are remembered through churches, statues and paintings. Yet there are certain places that speak more quietly. They are the places where a person laughed, studied, prayed, rested and spent time with family long before history began to take notice.
On Wednesday, July 1, devotees of Blessed Nazju Falzon will have the rare opportunity to gather for mass at one such place: in front of the summer residence which used to be owned by the Falzon family in Birkirkara.
The house situated in Triq San Ġiljan in Birkirkara, near the church of St Roch, remains one of the most tangible links to the Blessed’s earthly life. While Falzon is often associated with Valletta, where he was born and carried out much of his apostolic work, Birkirkara formed an important part of his personal story. It was here that he spent the summer months with his family, away from the bustle of the capital.
When we think of Blessed Nazju Falzon, we often think of the catechist who guided countless souls, the man who helped the poor, or the figure whom generations of Maltese have regarded as a model of holiness.
Yet before all this, he was a young man who walked these same streets, entered this same doorway and moved about this neighbourhood.
Therefore, this celebration is offering the opportunity to encounter the Blessed in a more personal way, not as a distant historical figure but as a real person whose daily life unfolded in these surroundings.
More than 160 years have passed since his death, yet much of the character of this part of Birkirkara endures. The narrow streets that weave around the old residence still evoke the village he once knew, offering a rare glimpse into a landscape that time has not entirely erased.
At the heart of it all stands the house itself, quietly preserving the memory of a man whose influence continues to be felt long after his passing.
Mass will be celebrated by the vice-postulator, Fr Anton Farrugia Pisani, OFM, on Wednesday, at 7pm in front of the residence at 28, Triq San Ġiljan, Birkirkara.
A marble plaque beside the main entrance identifies the house as the one in which Blessed Nazju Falzon used to reside. The public is invited to attend.
