A Master's degree course in Youth and Community Studies is to be launched in February 2005, the University of Malta said yesterday.

The course is intended to offer advanced professional education for experienced youth and community workers and other relevantly qualified workers in the field.

The aim is to use and capitalise on the ongoing practical and professional experience of those participating in the course and to equip them with the potential for an effective and successful career in youth and community work.

Course participants will be encouraged to take stock of developments in the various fields related to youth and community studies, thereby ensuring that they are conversant with the evolving knowledge-base of this invigorating academic discipline.

The course will be held over two years of part-time study and consists of core study-units.

A research component, extending over one year, will lead to the presentation of a dissertation written under supervision.

All those interested in making a career out of youth and community work and who have the necessary qualifications are encouraged to register for the course.

The university said that opportunities for engaging in youth and community work with various agencies and with state organisations, such as the Youth Empowerment Centres and the Community Learning Centres, were gradually increasing.

The ultimate aim was to further ameliorate the youth service in Malta and for the government to recognise youth and community workers as professional workers.
