Mattia Preti's painting in Sannat Parish Church fully restored
St Joseph and the Child Jesus underwent months of work
A 17th century painting by renowned artist Mattia Preti housed in Sannat Parish Church has been restored following months of work supported by the Gozo Ministry.
The “St Joseph with the Child Jesus” was restored by a dedicated team of professionals who breathed new life into one of the island’s artistic and cultural treasures while ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said such initiatives are crucial for the protection and appreciation of the island’s artistic heritage.
“Parish churches across Gozo, including that of Sannat, are like living museums accessible to all, filled with unique works that narrate our shared history,” Camilleri said.
The restoration process included meticulous documentation, advanced conservation techniques and careful aesthetic integration, all aimed at safeguarding the integrity and beauty of this unique artwork.
From cleaning centuries-old varnish, to repairing previous damage, to crafting a replica frame that respects the painting’s historical context, every step was executed with great precision and full respect for Preti’s original vision.
