Maximilian Ciantar has road rage sentence reduced
Maximilian Ciantar had a nine-month jail term reduced to four months on appeal
Maximilian Ciantar, who in 2010 ran over twin girls at a zebra crossing in Attard, had a nine-month jail term handed down for threatening to run over a woman, reduced to four months on appeal.
Ciantar was handed a nine-month prison sentence in 2019 after being found guilty of crashing into a woman’s car and threatening to run over the driver in a July 2014 incident.
Back then, the court heard how he crashed into a Toyota while driving his mother’s Renault just a few metres away from his house in Marsa.
When the female driver got out and confronted him, Ciantar allegedly threatened to smash her car again and to run her over. He then fled the scene.
The episode, relayed to police by eyewitnesses, sparked a manhunt.
Ciantar was eventually tracked down at his grandmother’s house in Qormi. He was found to have committed the offences while his licence was banned.
On appeal, he was cleared of driving while banned and driving without a licence, and his jail term was reduced. The court also banned him from driving for two years.
A treatment order was also issued to help him address his drug problem.
Ciantar had made headlines in 2010 when he was charged with running over twin girls in Attard. He was driving at 102 km/h when he hit the 10-year-old sisters as they crossed the road after a catechism class on April 28, 2010.
He was jailed for two years and banned from driving for 10 years, though the ban was later reduced to six months on appeal.
Since then, he has appeared in court several times on a range of charges.
Lawyer Francesca Zarb appeared for Ciantar.
