A motion in favour of Malta's accession to EU last Wednesday was approved by nine votes to one at a meeting, attended by ten Gozo mayors, and held at Ghajnsielem council office.

The motion, proposed by San Lawrenz mayor Noel Formosa and Nadur mayor Dr Chris Said, stated that local councils will directly benefit from funds once Malta joins the EU, and therefore encouraged all residents to vote Yes in the referendum.

Mr Formosa, who is also the regional representative of the Local Councils Association, told The Sunday Times that although Kercem mayor Joe Grima and Xaghra mayor Anthony Attard were not present at the meeting, they had already informed the assocation in writing that they were in favour of the motion.

Meanwhile, the mayors also discussed and approved a new free service offered by health clinics, and a contract between all local councils for the reinstatement of the Water Services Corporation, to ensure that all the works are carried out according to specified standards.

The mayors also discussed forms of help the local councils are to provide the SPCA to help reduce the number of stray dogs.

Gharb mayor David Apap Agius (PN) and Sannat mayor Anthony Mercieca (MLP) were not present at the meeting.
