I find it hard to believe that the government wants to help the younger generation receive the best education possible after what happened to my daughter on July 25.
My daughter wanted to apply for the BTEC Higher National Diploma in business offered by MCAST. The prospectus for 2004-2005 states that students with any two 'A' level passes may apply for this course. My daughter obtained pure maths and computer 'A' levels. However, she was told that she was under-qualified when she tried to apply, as she needed an 'A' level in accounts, marketing or economics.
The new requirements are apparently stipulated by the new prospectus (2005-2006), which was amended three weeks before registration date.
Do these people think students can study for 'A' levels within three weeks?
We have contacted various people at the Education Department, including Minister Louis Galea and communications co-ordinator Claude Sciberras. Mr Sciberras explained that "it is illegal for such changes to occur at such short notice at University."
Why should this not apply to MCAST?
