History was made last week when thanks to the funding of the Malta Olympic Committee, the Malta Canoe Federation (MCF) received its first two professional sprint kayaks.

The two Vanquish kayaks, from renowned firm Nelo-MAR Kayaks, of Portugal, have been symbolically purchased in white and red paint finish.

Their slim width and 520 cm competition length makes their use restricted for sprint flatwater racing.

Now, the MCF is expected to organise display races during the forthcoming national sprint championships. In the future these kayaks will be used to prepare the most promising local sprint canoeists for international competition.

National champion Chris Camilleri is currently making his final preparations for the seniors Flatwater World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, between August 25-28.

Camilleri's times have improved considerably and the MCF is expecting a good placing for the level of canoeing in Malta.
