The Mdina Rehabilitation Project (MRP) within the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure has presented an application to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for the paving of all the streets of Mdina.

The decision on the paving material came after months of preparation by the Mdina Rehabilitation Committee and by a special group that studied the question in detail. The committee also consulted two Italian experts.

MRP executive co-ordinator Ray Bondin stated that the committee has opted for the use of hardstone from Sicily in view of its cultural and geological similarities to Maltese hardstone.

A team made up of Mr Bondin, Professor Denis De Lucca and Architects Vincent Cassar, Ray Farrugia and Mireille Fsadni chose the design for the paving. The design was prepared by Architect Emmanuel Buttigieg.

Preparations are being made for the start of the paving works as soon as possible. The project can be carried out after preparation for the new underground services system is completed. Mr Bondin said that the project will be carried out in various phases.
