Former Labour minister Freddie Micallef will open this year's edition of the Mediterranean Nights Festival, being held on the ruins of the Opera House in Valletta.

This year's festival is a much reduced version of previous editions which included musicals, films and other cultural events.

An art exhibition will run from today until Monday and includes sculptures in metal, wood, stone, plastic and clay, as well as paintings, by 41 artists.

There will be a literary evening on Friday. The festival ends on Monday with a jazz concert.
