Meeting with ex-MP does not mean Alex Borg agrees with his views - PN

If Edwin Vassallo wants to be part of PN, 'there is a party line to follow'

Alex Borg’s meeting with ex-MP Edwin Vassallo does not mean the PN leader agrees with his views, a party spokesperson said.

Vassallo, known for his ultra-conservative views, offered to support the PN in any way he could after meeting Borg on Wednesday.

A party spokesperson downplayed the encounter, saying if Vassallo wants to be part of the PN, he must follow the party line.

“Meeting Edwin Vassallo does not set policy. Alex Borg met an ex-PN MP out of respect, as he met with many others. He is doing his best to patch up between people with different ideas.

"It does not mean he subscribes to views that do not belong to him. Alex Borg practises the politics of discussion and conviction, and that means if Edwin Vassallo wants to be part of the party, there is a party line to follow,” the spokesperson said.

In his take on the meeting, Vassallo said he has offered the maximum of his time and support for the party's "good cause" to ensure "we don't remain complicit in the destruction of all that makes our country".

This included fighting the issue of overpopulation, he said.

Vassallo, known to have always occupied the right wing of the PN, failed to get elected in 2022 after 25 years in parliament, winning just 371 first-count votes.

He subsequently left the PN and set up Moviment Solidarjetà. In 2024, he contested the MEP elections on the Moviment Solidarjetà ticket and received 717 first-count votes.

During his time in parliament, Vassallo was one of the most vocal opponents of divorce and actively campaigned against the introduction of abortion.

He was the only MP who opposed the introduction of same-sex marriage in 2017 and voted against the domestic violence bill in 2018, raising concerns about references to gender, which he said tried to paint over differences between men and women.

Last September, he endorsed a "rosary rally in reparation for Malta Gay Pride".
