With reference to Marie Wagner's letter dated December 29 (Who Said That Customer Service Is Not Dead?) the client was contacted personally by a Melita customer care representative and the matter brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
However, we would like to clarify matters for other clients who might be going through a similar situation with their internet service. All internet services are dependent to some degree on electricity for the service to reach the customer. Melita operates an advanced distribution network, with extensive passive components. On its active components (those that require electric supply) Melita has installed, at great expense, a standby power solution to provide continuous power on its network.
On average this provides for up to four hours standby on the Melita network when there is a power outage at that point.
It is only when there are power cuts of greater duration that such occurrences happen. Naturally, this feature covers the service feeding the home, not the modem or other device/s inside the home which are directly connected to the subscriber's electricity supply and connect the client to the internet.
Melita recognises the inconvenience to clients caused by such power outages, however there are various technical and practical difficulties that make it challenging for Melita to extend the standby period covering such outages.
