Labour MP Evarist Bartolo yesterday criticised the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) for having issued a permit for the building of a petrol station in Mellieha on a site which, he said, everybody in Mellieha opposed.

Mr Bartolo said in parliament that this site belonged to the government, and his appeal now was for the Lands Department not to transfer the site to the owners of the petrol stations. Should that happen, the government would be held responsible for the building of a petrol station on a site more suited for a sports facility, and it could no longer blame Mepa for what happened.

Mr Bartolo said the developer should be helped to find another site for the petrol station.
