Recent threats against MEP Roberta Metsola were a reminder of what happens when societies ignore right-wing sentiments, according to human rights foundation Aditus.

“It is unacceptable for any person to be attacked in such a manner, and we expect a full and unequivocal condemnation of these threats by the competent authorities,” the foundation said.

An unknown individual who called himself ‘Save Malta’ posted on Facebook that Dr Metsola “should be shot”.

The Nationalist MEP is often at the receiving end of attacks by xenophobes and racists because of her views on migration. Yet, she said felt the latest threat went a step too far and would be forwarding it to the police.

I didn’t get into politics to be liked, and I do expect criticism, but the level of intolerance and hatred in Malta is unbelievable

“I didn’t get into politics to be liked, and I do expect criticism, but the level of intolerance and hatred in Malta is unbelievable,” Dr Metsola told the Times of Malta yesterday.

Aditus said that discussions on migration were challenging and often triggered deep emotional reactions.

“Discussions demand respect for all involved, accurate information on which to base arguments and conclusions and a common understanding that the expression of disagreements is an integral part of democracy,” the foundation said.

Aditus director Neil Falzon urged the authorities and society to take a clearer stand against racism and hate speech, in support of a migration discussion that was inclusive, respectful and dignified.

This was not the first time that the MEP was the target of hate speech because of her views on migration. In 2014, a man had written that he hoped she would be gang-raped by illegal immigrants. He later said his account had been hacked.
