European socialist parliamentarian Anna Karamanou has tabled a question in the European Parliament asking the European Commission to confirm whether it had been informed by the Maltese government about the choice of the two sites for temporary landfills.
According to the text released by Qrendi local council, Ms Karamanou also asked the commission whether it considered that this temporary solution complied with the current and future member states' commitment to safeguarding and enhancing Europe's cultural heritage.
Ms Karamanou said that to comply with the EU Landfill Directive, the government of Malta had announced that two quarries for the dumping of domestic and organic waste were to be set up as temporary landfills, until an engineered landfill at Ghallis was built in 2005.
She said the choice of the two identified quarries had raised serious objections, since they were only a few hundred metres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Mnajdra and Hagar Qim megalithic temples, which had been earmarked as a heritage park.
