A number of draft amendments are being proposed by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) to ensure that the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) keeps achieving high quality results through the promotion of more holistic and sustainable projects that ultimately ‘create better places to live in.’
The key proposals include the eligibility of projects that could benefit from the available funds, the necessary and appropriate documentation and procedures for requesting funds and the shift to more transparency in the decisions taken by the UIF committee.
Set up in October 2006, the fund has accumulated €6.7million, while the UIF Committee received 323 projects for its consideration, of which it approved 133 worth over €4.4 million.
These projects include the upgrading of playing fields, the embellishment and landscaping of open spaces and gardens, the installation of energy-saving street-lighting, the upgrading of permanent street furniture, the installation of equipment for persons with special needs, paving works and the creation of pedestrian zones.
