The Mepa board yesterday gave the green light to the restoration of the internal steel and cast iron structure, external facade and roof of the old Valletta Market building.

Works will also include the removal of elements added to the building during the 1980s.

The building that houses theValletta Market, which is located in an area bordered by four streets, is a scheduled Grade One landmark building dating back to the Victorian period.

Following the completion of the works, the building itself, subject to a separate planning application, is expected to be reopened and revive the commercial activities it was well known for.
