Mepa has drawn up a code of conduct on the management of invasive alien plants.

Darren Stevens, head of the Ecosystems Management Unit, said the code is open for consultation up to November 7. The code of conduct can be viewed as from tomorrow on www.mepa.org.mt

He said that there are around 800 alien plant species in Malta, but only around 80 of these can cause harm, such as by destroying endemic plants or habitats or changing the chemical composition of soil.

GRADING OF CHURCH BUILDINGS

During a media briefing, Joseph Magro Conti, manager of the Heritage Planning Unit, also explained that Mepa recently scheduled churches and graded them according to their importance. Grade 1, the most important grade, was allocated to churches built before 1800. The next level are churches built between 1900 and the second world war and the next were built after 1940.

The process was carried out in consultation with the Curia and parishes. The grading means that the structure of the churches may not be altered or extended.
