The Astronomical Association of Malta said yesterday the Geminid meteor shower would take place this evening.

The association said the meteor shower occurred when earth encounters the orbit of the asteroid Phaethon sweeping up debris left behind by this asteroid whose origins were still not clear.

The shower has been observed only in the last 150 years whereas others have been documented for centuries.

Members of the association will be observing the shower from L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha, near the chapel, from 10 p.m. onwards.
