Metsola named among Corriere della Sera's women of the year
Maltese EP President cited for her rising influence and diplomatic skills
Roberta Metsola has been named among Corriere della Sera’s “Women of the Year”.
The Italian media house highlighted Metsola’s rising influence in world politics and cited her "remarkable diplomatic skills" as defining characteristics of her leadership.
Metsola, it suggests, could end up being the EPP’s next candidate to take over from European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
Corriere della Sera’s list features 74 women from across the world and different sectors in society. Pop stars Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift are on the list, as are writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, film director Lena Dunham, footballer Cristiana Girelli and Anthropic AI co-founder Daniela Amodei, among others.
Metsola’s colleagues von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, also made the list.
In its citation, the Italian media outlet highlighted Metsola’s ability to work alongside von der Leyen, collaborating with the Commission and EU Council.
“This has also included taking uncomfortable positions, such as when she promised EU leaders she would "work to find compromises" on the regulatory simplification of the Green Deal,” Corriere della Sera noted, with that move risking a schism with parliament’s Socialists, Greens, and the left.
The Italian media outlet described Metsola as the "pro-European face of the EU abroad," singling out her unwavering support for Ukraine.
Corriere della Sera has been publishing its ‘women of they year’ list since 2016. The annual feature seeks to highlight and celebrate high-achievingm resilient, creative, pioneering and non-conformist women who are helping to shape the world.
