There was further good news for Maltese triathlon last Sunday as Maria Mifsud Bonnici finished fifth in her category at the London Triathlon, Europe's biggest triathlon and second in the world.

Mifsud Bonnici took part in the newly-formed sub-2 hours 30 minutes category and, although there were only 15 participants in this particular bracket, it is still an impressive achievement particularly as she only finished four minutes and 30 seconds behind the winner, Lauren Davies.

Mifsud Bonnici confirmed her recent improvement in the swim, coming fourth out of the water and continued with a good cycle where she had the fifth fastest time.

At that stage, there was little evidence of the tiredness that she has complained about earlier during the week but this started to show during the run where she lost valuable seconds that would have seen her finishing even higher.

Unfortunately, there was no good news from Dermot Galea, who finished last in the Elite wave.

With some top triathletes taking part in this category, it was always going to be tough for Galea who nevertheless held hopes of finally going below the two-hour mark.

He was way off that timing as he finished the course in 2:07:11. A slow start in the swim meant Galea lost contact with the main group early on, making it extremely difficult for him to catch up.

And, despite gaining some seconds in the cycle the strain of doing this without the help of drafting left its mark as he slipped back once again during the run.
