A 21-year-old from Sierra Leone who lives in Marsascala has pleaded not guilty to having caused a traffic accident which seriously injured an immigrant who was a passenger in his car.

The man is alleged to have been the driver of a Citroen which crashed into a centre strip and then into a tree on Saturday evening at Council of Europe Road, Luqa.

He was accused of negligent driving and failing to observe traffic regulations.

Another three migrants who were in the car were slightly injured.

The accused was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000.

Defence lawyer Chris Busietta said his client has been living in Malta for the past two years and works with a contractor.
