An irregular migrant was yesterday charged with escaping from a Hal Far detention centre last year and absconding to Holland.

The man claimed that his name was not that on the charge sheet - Ali Abdullah Mizughi Midad - and chose not to answer questions put to him, including his particulars.

He was charged with escaping from the detention centre on May 10, 2004, failing to inform immigration authorities on leaving the island and relapsing.

The man was sent back to Malta when apprehended by the Dutch authorities.

The man chose not to register a plea and for this reason Magistrate Lawrence Quintano registered the plea as not guilty, according to law.

Police Inspector Mario Haber prosecuted.

Daniela Mangion appeared for the man.
