In the space of just eight months, ice hockey has taken great strides in establishing itself in Malta. Beginning with a series of promotional games, this particular sport has now taken root with the creation of the Malta Ice Hockey League (MIHL).

Organised by a dedicated group of foreign and local players, the league boasts a membership of over 40 players spread over four teams. Players hail from Latvia, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, Canada, US, Sweden, England, Slovakia, Austria and Malta.

Competition got underway last weekend and will run for ten weeks. Games are played on Mondays at the Eden Ice Arena, at 7.30 and at 9.15 p.m.

Verdala International School Vipers vs McDonalds Flyers 6-7

The season began quickly for the Vipers. In front of a small crowd of curious spectators, Robert Holtet scored inside the opening 30 seconds of the inaugural game to carry the momentum for VIS.

After the Vipers took a 3-1 lead midway through the first period, the two teams traded goals often and at the half it was 4-3 for VIS.

The tables turned in the second half with the line of Matthew Borg and Vladimir Kuklev registering four points apiece, including a pair of last-minute goals by Kuklev to seal victory for McDonalds.

Andrew Gatt of the VIS Vipers tallied four points, including the first hat-trick of the new season.

Maple Leafs vs Pirates 1-8

Brilliant defence and sensational goaltending from Pirates' Shaun Chircop was the story of this match. The Pirates took an early lead with goals from Alex and Kenny Attard and never looked back on their way to an impressive win.

Andris Ozolins, of Maple Leafs, spoiled Chircop's shutout bid with less than ten minutes to play on a clever pass from captain Chris Gatt. Mike Calleja hit a hat-trick and tied team-mate Alex Attard with four points on the night.

Monday's fixtures: McDonalds Flyers vs Pirates; VIS Vipers vs Maple Leafs. Admission to games is free.
