A Palestinian man stabbed one Israeli to death and wounded another on Tel Aviv's seaside promenade yesterday in an attack claimed by a group linked to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction.

Rattling the fragile ceasefire crucial to the US-backed "road map" peace plan, the attack was the first in an Israeli city since leading militant groups announced a three-month truce on June 29.

A 23-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem first stabbed and wounded a security guard outside a Tel Aviv restaurant, then fled to the beach where he killed a 24-year-old Israeli man who was taking a stroll with his girlfriend.

A passer-by shot him in the leg, disabling him until police arrived at the scene and arrested him.
