Some 40 members of the Historical Re-Enactment Group of Malta set up a training camp and carried out military drills and manoeuvres at Torri Mamo in Marsascala, re-enacting the final years of the rule of the Knights of St John on the island.
Torri Mamo, a 17th century fortified home on the outskirts of Marsascala, was transformed into a living museum yesterday, as one in a series programmed between Din l-Art Helwa and the Historical Re-Enactment Group of Malta to enable the public to enjoy some of Malta's historic sites and better understand their original purpose.
Torri Mamo, built in 1657, is one of the historic properties formally handed over recently to Din l-Art Helwa by the government under deed of guardianship.
With its unique St Andrew's cross formation and domed ceiling, this fortified country home is surrounded by a dry ditch and its central hall is bomb proof, making it a well-defended position offering shelter to as many as 80.
The HRGM is a voluntary group who keep alive the way of life, skills and military art of the militias and regiments who fought to defend Malta at the end of the 18th century through to the early years of British rule.
All proceeds will go towards Din l-Art Helwa's restoration and maintenance of the tower.
