Hibernians are currently giving a trial to a Latvian player, Olegs Malasenoks. The 23-year-old striker turned out for Latvian top-division side FK Tranzits last season.

The Paolites, who have retained Bulgarian utility player Rumen Galabov and Uruguayan midfielder Christian Callejas from last season's championship-winning squad, have a vacant slot for another overseas player after they decided not to renew the contract of Zeferino Soares Borges.

The lanky forward had joined Hibs on a short-term contract in March after Congo winger Alexis Tekumu Mbongo left the club for personal reasons.

Several players had trials with Hibs in the last three months but none impressed coach Mark Miller sufficiently to be offered a permanent deal.

English forward Iyseden Christie looked set to become Hibs' third foreign player but Miller decided at the time that he wanted to assess other options before making a final decision.

Charles Obi Ikechukwu was in Hibs' starting line-up for their Super Cup defeat to Sliema Wanderers but the Nigerian was ushered to the exit door soon after.

Earlier this month, Hibs tried to sign a Cameroonian striker who had been recommended by Sheffield United but they failed to reach agreement over the terms of his contract.

Sources have told The Times that Malasenoks, a former Latvia U-21 international, has a good chance of making the cut at Hibs on the basis of his good CV and the positive impression he left on Miller in his first training session.

With Hibs facing up to three league matches in seven days, starting with Sunday's clash against Dingli Swallows, Miller is keen to strengthen his squad, especially in attack.

Furthermore, the Hibs mentor is grappling with a growing injury list as the likes of Aaron Xuereb, Jonathan Caruana and Ben Camilleri are all doubtful for this weekend's game.

Etienne Barbara, signed in the close season, scored a hat-trick in Hibs' 3-1 victory over Marsaxlokk last month but that match has since been declared null following the latter's demotion to Division One. This means that Hibs' encounter with Dingli Swallows will be their first of the 2009/10 BOV Premier League campaign.

Meanwhile, Floriana have emerged as favourites to sign Brian Said. The veteran Malta defender is awaiting the outcome of Marsaxlokk's appeal against their relegation from the Premier League before deciding on his next move.

Marsaxlokk were ordered to drop one division by the Malta FA Board to Investigate Corrupt Practices earlier this month after former club official Peter Hartshorne was found guilty of a match-fixing attempt. The club's appeal against the sentence will be heard this evening.

Said, 36, played in Marsaxlokk's Premier League match against Dingli Swallows, the Blues' last outing before the club lost its top-flight status, but he's free to sign for another team after terminating his contract with the southseasiders at the end of last month.

The Times has information that Floriana have already had positive talks with Said who played for the Greens earlier in his career.

Ħamrun Spartans, who will replace Marsaxlokk in this season's Premier League, are also in the race for Said.
