The European Parliament backed an initiative on breast cancer screening taken by MEP Miriam Dalli along with other MEPs and Europa Donna.

They came up with a written declaration that will now be sent to the European Commission and the Council.

Its aim is to secure the provision of preventive services targeting the early detection of breast cancer across Europe.

It also calls for screening in all 28 member states and the setting up of multidisciplinary specialist breast units by 2016.

Last year, 64 per cent of women in Malta invited to be examined at the screening unit accepted the offer.
