The Labour Party's delegate for the Electoral Commission Michael Falzon has demanded a written assurance that mistakes which, he said, were being made in the process of the identity card renewal would not be repeated in the electoral register.

In a letter to chief electoral commissioner Carmel Degabriele, Dr Falzon said that yet again the commission had contacted a large number of people asking them to renew their identity cards despite the fact that some of them had been dead for a long time.

Dr Falzon said that this showed the confusion that reigned at the electoral office, which fell under the responsibility of the Electoral Commission.

Dr Falzon said he had not yet received a reply to the letter he sent to the commission two weeks ago.
