Wayne Pace had mixed fortunes on the opening day of the European U-17 Snooker Open, currently underway at the Apple Snooker Club, Buġibba.
The 16-year-old cueist first beat Belgium's Glenn Dossche 3-0 (71-42, 58-14, 65-26) but then lost his match against Sam Harvey, of England, 1-3 (24-91, 76-8, 31-71, 28-62).
In the second frame Pace potted a break of 60.
The other Maltese player in the tournament, Christopher Peplow, lost his first match to Scott Donaldson (Scotland) 0-3 (16-82, 19-72, 20-67).
In other matches played so far, Declan Brennan (Northern Ireland) beat Ryan Cronin (Ireland) 3-1, Michael Leslie (Scotland) beat Zak Barton (England) 3-1 and in his second match Cronin beat Alexis Callewaert (France) 3-0.
Twenty players from 10 European countries are taking part in the tournament. Matches are played daily between 9.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.
