The Labour Party leadership yesterday met Police Commissioner John Rizzo and told him the police should do their utmost to ensure that calm and security prevailed during the final phase of the electoral campaign, on election day, during the counting of votes and on the announcement of the election result.
The meeting was attended by Labour leader Alfred Sant, deputy leaders George Vella and Joe Brincat and party secretary general Jimmy Magro.
Speaking to reporters outside the police headquarters, in Floriana after the meeting, Dr Sant said Labour would back the police in the steps it takes against anyone who disrupts public order or threatens security.
The Labour Party expected the police to maintain full security in the country and proceed, without fear or favour, against anyone who provoked or who threatened the security of the country or the personal security of other people.
Dr Sant said the police would have the backing of the party in the steps they would need to take to maintain calm and public order.
