MLP spokesman asks to visit detention centres

Dr Gavin Gulia, Labour spokesman for home affairs, has asked the Police Commissioner for permission to visit the detention centres for illegal immigrants.

Dr Gulia told the Police Commissioner in a letter that he wished to visit the detention centres at General Police Headquarters in Floriana and at Hal Far as well as the quarters housing other immigrants at Mount Carmel Hospital to talk to them and to inspect their living conditions.

He said that he wished that he wished that any criticism he would make on these conditions would be based on direct experience rather than information passed to him by sources, even though these were very reliable.
