Momentum candidate reports theft of campaign banners in Marsascala
Banners belonging to other parties not touched, party says
Momentum electoral candidate Mark Camilleri Gambin has filed a police report after his campaign banners were allegedly stolen from Marsascala.
The banners belonged to Camilleri Gambin, Momentum’s general secretary, who is contesting the third district, where Marsascala is located. In a statement on Sunday, the party said the banners appeared to have been specifically targeted, claiming that campaign material belonging to other political parties in the same area had not been touched.
Camilleri Gambin, Momentum said, has in recent weeks been critical of the Marsascala promenade project, calling for greater transparency from the authorities and clearer information for residents.
Momentum said the theft suggested that some people were uncomfortable with the candidate’s “genuine and open methodology” and his questions about major local projects.
A police report was filed on Friday morning, the party said.
Writing on social media, Camilleri Gambin described the incident as a “blatant attempt at censorship” but said it would not deter him.
“While it is certainly frustrating to deal with these petty tactics, this incident will absolutely not slow us down,” he said.
“If someone believes that removing a few banners will silence our questions about the Marsascala promenade project, they are very much mistaken. We will keep fighting for good governance, a beautiful island, and a transparent process for all residents.”
The party urged anyone with information about the alleged theft to contact the authorities.
At the start of the election campaign in April, the party accused the government's Cleansing Department of stealing five of its electoral banners just hours after they were erected in Santa Venera and Marsa.
