On August 22, 2004, you published my letter regarding the erection of an antenna - telecommunications hub - on the historic Victoria Dwejra Lines, which are also advertised as a tourist attraction and are in one of the few beautiful quiet country areas where families can come to walk and picnic.
I must draw your attention to the fact that although MEPA had refused a permit, PA1316/04, for the erection of an antenna, a contractor has now started working on site on the installation of a telecommunications hub.
I asked the men if they had a MEPA permit and they said no. I went to MEPA on April 14 with a letter plus petition from people in this area objecting to the telecommunications hub's erection.
I was told that the permit had been refused. I lodged a report at the Rabat police station and they came and stopped the men working; I spoke to the senior police officer there.
Later the same police officer told me he had received a letter from MEPA giving permission to put up a temporary antenna for a fortnight. The police officer then allowed the men to continue working.
Since MEPA had refused a permit for the construction of an antenna, have they now changed their mind? What about our bad TV reception? Not long ago MEPA had scheduled the Victoria Dwejra Lines as Grade 1 and its policies are to protect historical and ecologically-sensitive areas from any development.
The Malta Tourism Authority have included this area as a countryside walk for tourists and locals.
It could not promote the area for its scenic value and then accept such a proposal. It is no wonder there are no tourists. All the residents from these areas have signed a petition against this proposal and are complaining to the Rabat police.
I am submitting a copy of this letter to the European Commission in Brussels.
